A Novel Testing Apparatus for Tribological Studies at the Small Scale
نویسنده
چکیده
A novel flexure-based biaxial compression/shear apparatus has been designed, built, and utilized to conduct tribological studies of interfaces relevant to MEMS. Aspects of our new apparatus are detailed and its capabilities are demonstrated by an investigation of two interfaces for MEMS applications. Tribological tests may be performed with normal and tangential forces in the μN to N range and relative sliding displacements in the nm to mm range. In this testing range, the new experimental apparatus represents an improvement over existing techniques for tribological studies at the small scale. Keywords— MEMS, Friction, Mechanical testing.

متن کاملTribological Behaviour of Fe-Al Intermetallic Compound Coated Carbon Tool Steel
The use of Fe-Al intermetallic compound coatings has been investigated in order to improve the tribological behaviour of carbon tool steel. The coatings were formed by a pack cementation process and subsequently diffusion annealing at 900˚C in an argon controlled atmosphere. The optimum diffusion time was selected on the basis of optimum thickness and tribological behaviour.

متن کاملScaling Effects on Materials Tribology: From Macro to Micro Scale
The tribological study of materials inherently involves the interaction of surface asperities at the micro to nanoscopic length scales. This is the case for large scale engineering applications with sliding contacts, where the real area of contact is made up of small contacting asperities that make up only a fraction of the apparent area of contact. This is why researchers have sought to create...
